I went snorkeling in a beautiful, secluded cove in Maui once. It was breathtaking! Snorkeling in that cove was like swimming in a fish tank. There were so many fish and so many different kinds and so many colors! It was ideal, there was only one small problem. I had read on a review that in that specific cove others had seen sharks in the underwater caves. I couldn’t get that thought out of my mind. I was convinced that I was going to be eaten by one of those harmless sharks and no one would ever know what happened to me. I swam for maybe 5 minutes and then couldn’t take it any longer and had to get out of the water. I couldn’t enjoy that beautiful area fully because I was so focused on the possibility of running into a shark. And maybe it was healthy fear.
But isn’t it interesting to note that our emotional state sometimes has a greater impact on our experience than the situation itself? That area was beautiful and beyond amazing for snorkeling, but my emotions limited my opportunity to fully experience that moment.
