As silly as it may sound, after watching the Greatest Showman the idea of creating goodness in the world by working towards your dreams and goals has been on my mind.
Now I know not all the facts of history were accurately portrayed, but that is a discussion for another group. I’m just focusing on the story that was told and whether it be fiction or not there are still messages embedded in the story that are valuable.
Like the messages captured in these moments:
“I wish for happiness like this forever.”
“When you’re careless with other people, you bring ruin upon yourself.”
“I never minded the risk, but we always did it together.”
“No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.”
“I make no apologies, this is me.”
I could sit down and talk for hours about each one of those moments. In fact I’d love to sit down and have a conversation with others and talk about those moments and share thoughts of what it means and to share and hear different perspectives and views on those moments. I like conversations like that.
But for now I just want to discuss the message of dreams and coming alive. Which to me is the ability to create something good. The ability create goodness in the world. To be able to create something impactful. To be able to create something that awakens the potential in others. The ability to create something that is valuable. The ability to create something that benefits others. Can you see how goodness is created when someone follows their heart and works towards their dreams?
But at this point, I’d like to insert my opinion on the matter. I think it matters, very much, our motivation driving our dreams. Dreams and goals that are driven by the need to manage your legitimacy in the world can turn toxic and destructive. Dreams and goals driven to feel accepted, loved, valued, needed, and important is walking a tightrope without net. One of the dangers in allowing our dreams to be motivated in this way is that you will likely be careless with other people, which will bring ruin upon yourself and others. It can be very destructive when we use our dreams to manage our sense of self, that is to say, when we wrap our sense of self around our dreams.
We increase our capacity to do good through the development of our self.
