Questions about Depression in Relation to One’s Sense of Self

  1. Does an undeveloped sense of self make one more susceptible to depression?
  2. How would you define “depression”? Are there different types of depression? For example, what’s the difference between facing a challenging situation (such as a loss of job, death, illness, etc…) and feeling sad, depressed, and discouraged verses being depressed. Is there a difference?
  3. Does having a strong sense of self make one more able to tolerate challenging situations? I think someone with a strong sense of self will be more capable of wadding through suffering and coming out a better person for it.
  4. Can someone combat depression by strengthening their sense of self?
